Alan Daugherty completed a BSc in Pharmacology at Sunderland Polytechnic and received his PhD and DSc from the University of Bath. He moved to Washington University in St. Louis for fellowship training. Subsequently, he was appointed to the faculty at Washington University where he continued his studies on mechanisms of lipoprotein modification and immune function on the development of atherosclerosis.

In 1997, he moved to the University of Kentucky. While performing a collaborative study with Lisa Cassis on the role of hypertension in development of atherosclerosis, they serendipitously developed a model of aortic aneurysms in both the abdominal and thoracic region. Alan Daugherty is the Linda and Jack Gill Professor of Preventive Cardiology, Director of the Saha Cardiovascular Research Center, Chair of the Department of Physiology, Senior Associate Dean for Research in the College of Medicine, and Associate Vice President for Research. He is the current Editor-in-Chief of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.
