Alan Irvine qualified in Medicine from Queen’s University Belfast in 1991. Since 1995, he has maintained a research interest in genetic skin disease. In 1998 he was awarded a MD in Human Genetics from Queen’s University. After completion of specialist training, he undertook fellowships in pediatric dermatology in London (Great Ormond Street Hospital/ Institute of Child Health) and Chicago (Children’s Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University), where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
In October 2002, he was appointed Consultant Pediatric Dermatologist in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and. He is an Associate Professor of Dermatology, Trinity College Dublin. His research interests for the last 15 years have been in epithelial genetics initially in single gene disorders and more recently in complex disease. A recent collaborative initiative with Prof. Irwin McLean (University of Dundee, UK) has disclosed key insights into the genetic basis of atopic dermatitis.His current research areas involve genetics and biophysical investigations of atopic dermatitis.
Prof. Irvine is a scientific reviewer for several journals and an ad hoc reviewer for several grant funding bodies including the Medical Research Council (UK), the Welcome Trust and DEBRA. He has published more than 90 journal articles, mostly on genetics and the skin. He is a regular speaker at national and international meetings.
