Dr Alain Vertès is a Sloan Fellow from London Business School and a microbiologist by training (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Institut Pasteur Paris, and University of Lille Flandres-Artois). A strategy and business development consultant for several companies, including cell therapeutic biotechs, he works to enable seed funding and partnering in the field. Focusing on technology deployment and innovation commercialization, he has contributed to both white (industrial) and red (pharmaceutical) biotechnology, in different functions including research, manufacturing, contract research (Battelle Memorial Institute, PPD), and strategic alliances in pharmaceuticals (Roche, Pfizer, Lilly), petrochemicals (Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation), public research (Institut Pasteur, Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth), and consulting (Australian Strategic Policy Institute, NxR Biotechnologies GmbH). With worldwide experience in partnering and licensing groups of big pharmas, he led reviews of strategic needs for finding, implementing and managing partnerships from licensing to M&As. With hands-on involvement in the deployment of radical innovation for example for bringing to patients disease-modifying, paradigm-changing therapeutics, he managed major siRNA alliances and led global therapeutic stem cell initiatives.
