Dr. Akio Morita graduated at the University of Tokyo, School of Medicine and trained in neurosurgery under Professors. Keiji Sano, Kintomo Takakura, Takanori Fukushima, Tomio Sasaki and Takaaki Kirino. After his training he became a clinical fellow and later resident fellow of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
He studied multi-subspecialty neurosurgical fields and completed a residency at Mayo Clinic in 1996, after which he became an assistant professor at George Washington University, DC under Prof. Laligam N. Sekhar. In 1998, he returned to the University of Tokyo and became an Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor there in 2002. He specialized in Cranial Base Surgery and Vascular Surgery and performed more than 5000 surgeries in his career.
In research, he studied robotic medical engineering and clinical studies of vascular pathologies including the Japanese cohort study of unruptured cerebral aneurysms (UCAS Japan). His extensive publication list includes papers in the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet Neurology, with a Total Impact Factor of over 600. He currently serves as one of the board members of the Japan Neurosurgical Society and Assistant Secretary of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.
