Dr Ahmet Fuat, a GP at the Carmel Medical Practice in Darlington was presented with a PhD degree by Durham University vice-chancellor Bill Bryson recently.

Dr Fuat spent more than six years doing part-time research into the management of heart failure across primary and secondary care.

His work, carried out while he continued to see patients at his Darlington GP surgery, led to improvements in the management of heart failure across the UK.

Locally, his research contributed to the setting up of a new one stop diagnostic heart clinic at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
