A.J. Yates, Jr., MD, is a graduate of Harvard College, and completed his doctor of medicine, internship, and residency at Johns Hopkins. He is associate professor and vice chairman for quality management within the UPMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He serves as chief of orthopaedics at UPMC Shadyside, where he specializes in hip and knee replacement as well as knee arthroscopy. Dr. Yates is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, in which he is chairman of the EBM committee.

Dr. Yates is currently serving on the Surgical Committee for the National Quality Forum, as well as CMS technical expert panels. He serves on MEDCAC and previously served on the Device panel for the FDA. He has helped AAOS prepare several national clinical guidelines and appropriate use criteria. His research interests include interventions for osteoarthritis, patient-derived outcomes, and developing techniques for promoting the safest and best long-term outcomes in joint replacement.
