Adam J. Gordon, MD, MPH, FACP, FASAM, CMRO is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Advisory Dean at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is a board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and is certified in Addiction Medicine from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)/the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). He is core faculty of the VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP), the VA Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center of VISN 4 (MIRECC), and the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Research on Health Care (CRHC). He leads health services investigations to improve access to medical, mental health, and substance abuse services and for patients with addictive disorders, who are homeless, and other vulnerable populations. He currently coordinates research investigations funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

Dr. Gordon has been active in clinical, educational, and research capacities involving drug and alcohol and homeless communities in Pittsburgh since 1992. He serves as a national mentor for the American Society of Addiction Medicine/Substance Abuse Mental Health Service Administration’s Physician Clinical Support System (PCSS-B and PCSS-M) to mentor physicians in office based treatment of opioid dependence and appropriate methadone medication prescribing. He leads the Buprenorphine in the VA Project – a national consult service to assist providers in treating opioid dependent Veterans. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and abstracts, invited papers, books, book chapters, and internet-based products and is the author of the book, Physical Illness and Drugs of Abuse: A Review of the Evidence, published by Cambridge University Press. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief to the Substance Abuse journal and is involved in a variety of editorial teams, review panels, guideline/protocol committees, and advisory panels.
