Dr. Adam Farmer was educated at Stonyhurst College, University College London, Barts and the London School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School. He was awarded a BSc in 1998 in human physiology and qualified with the degrees of MBBS in 2001. He undertook his specialist training in the West Midlands before moving to the internationally renowned Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology in London, where he performed a body of research funded by the Medical Research Council, which culminated in a Ph.D. He was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2017.

He currently works as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the University Hospitals of North Midlands where he is Clinical Director of Specialised Medicine. He also has academic positions at the Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology, Keele University, and Aalborg University in Denmark.

He is the UK representative on the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility and is chair of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility section of the British Society of Gastroenterology. He also serves on the United European Gastroenterology research committee.

His main clinical interests concern all aspects of gastroenterology particularly irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn/reflux, diarrhea, and constipation as well as digestive symptoms that arise as a consequence of diabetes and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. He is considered to be an international expert in his field having been awarded prestigious prizes from the American Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility and the United European Gastroenterology Federation.
