Dr. Abigail Basson, RD, LD, Ph.D., is a registered dietitian and NIH-funded Instructor in the Division of Gastroenterology, School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She is currently the PI of a clinical study investigating the effect of diet on the gut microbiome in patients with Crohn’s disease at the Digestive Health Institute, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

Her overarching research goal is to identify diet-based therapeutic modifiers of disease severity in patients affected with Crohn’s disease. Before joining the Division of Gastroenterology at CWRU, Abigail served as a faculty-appointed lecturer in the Department of Dietetics at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa where she completed her Ph.D. in Public Health & Nutrition. Abigail completed her BSc in Dietetics at Rutgers University, her MSc in Clinical Nutrition at New York University, and holds a postgraduate qualification in Nutrigenomics from the University of Arizona. She has 13 years of experience as a clinical dietitian, including 9 years of IBD-focused clinical research, and has mentored over 100 students both within the hospital and the university teaching/research setting.
