Course Description: Another important change was introducing a scientific committee which allows us to draw on input from across South Africa, and you can be assured of a relevant and cutting-edge programme under the leadership of Professor Anthony Figaji and his team. As always, This Congress will be preceded by workshops and symposia, and this year we look forward to a Neuro-oncology Workshop held as part of South African Congress of Oncology (SACO) in conjunction with Paediatric Brain Tumour Workshop (PBTW ) and the Society for Neuro-oncology of Sub-Saharan Africa (SNOSSA). The theme for this Congress is “Changing and Improving South Africa’s Transplant Future”. The first change we would like to implement is to collaborate and share this experience with our colleagues from SATiBA (SA Tissue Bank Association), to reaffirm our commitment to both tissue and solid organ transplantation. We are privileged to have several international guest speakers and visitors who will be sharing their expertise with us and we look forward to their contributions. Delegates can expect presentations in all fields of transplantation with a particular focus on ethics in transplantation, kidney paired exchange / domino transplant initiatives and a variety of new developments in the areas of thoracic and liver transplantation. On the tissue side, will focus on the POPI Act and informed consent, quality management, tissue engineering and cell therapy and bio-repositories. A pre-congress workshop in collaboration with the International Society of Organ Donation and Procurement (ISODP) will be held on the 5th of September, with a strong focus on strategies to improve organ and tissue donation in the South African context. Course Description : Parasitic worms, or helminths, infect roughly one in five people on the planet and cause pathology in hundreds of millions. Given the global impact on human health and welfare, there is a great need to develop novel therapies and/or vaccines that target helminths. In addition, the unique nature of how these parasites interact with their hosts has brought tremendous insight into the mammalian immune system. Experimental studies of helminth infection have led to the identification of new cell types involved in type 2 immunity, including innate lymphoid cells, tuft cells, and new roles for neurons, in addition to revealing novel pathways of tissue repair and immune-modulation. The interactions of helminths with the microbiome has also come to light in recent years. This conference will highlight some of the most impactful advances in the fields of helminth genomics, helminth biology, vaccine design and host protective immunity, in addition to new discoveries highlighting the ability of these organisms to modulate the immune system, human disease and the microbiome.
