Essen University Medicine includes the Essen University Hospital and twelve subsidiaries, including the Ruhrland Clinic, the St. Josef Hospital in Werden, Cardiac Surgery in Huttrop and the West German Proton Therapy Center in Essen. With around 1,700 beds, Essen University Medicine is the leading health competence center in the Ruhr area and is on the way to becoming a smart hospital. In 2018, our 8,500 employees treated 72,000 inpatients and 300,000 outpatients. The focus is on heart and vascular medicine, oncology and transplantation. With the West German Tumor Center, one of the largest tumor centers in Germany, the West German Center for Organ Transplantation, an internationally leading center for transplantation, in which our specialists with liver, kidney, pancreas, Heart and lungs transplant all vital organs, as well as the West German Heart and Vascular Center, a supra-regional center for maximum cardiovascular care, the Essen University Medical Center is important for the care of patients far beyond the region.
