About:
Movement, for nearly one in two Americans over the age of 18, and many children, is restricted by a musculoskeletal disorder - arthritis, back pain, fracture, osteoporosis, sports trauma, and other ailments which affect function and mobility.
As part of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health, which was previously known as the Bone and Joint Decade; U.S. patient and healthcare professional organizations, medical schools, government agencies, health systems providers and industry, have come together as part of the United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) to improve prevention of bone and joint disorders, and the quality of life for those affected. This goal begins with increased awareness, solid information and more research.
The USBJI believes that advances to improve the musculoskeletal health of Americans are most likely to occur by working collaboratively.
Initiative:
The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) is the U.S. National Action Network of the Global Bone and Joint Decade, a multi-disciplinary initiative targeting the care of people with musculoskeletal conditions— bone and joint disorders. Its focus is on improving your quality of life as well as advancing the understanding and treatment of those conditions through research, prevention, and education. Bones, and the joints that create function and movement are connected by muscle and ligaments. Their state of health and how they enable you to lead an active and healthy life is what the Initiative aims to improve.
Vision:
Every American knows how to maximize musculoskeletal health throughout his or her lifetime.
Mission:
To raise the priority of musculoskeletal health through the collective action of all stakeholders.
Values:
• The USBJI believes that a broader and unified multidisciplinary voice will lead to more effective advocacy and increased public awareness of the need for improved musculoskeletal health.
• USBJI will add depth and breadth to the understanding of bone and joint disorders through a broader membership, a sharing of diverse perspectives, and exchange of knowledge among diverse providers, researchers and individuals with musculoskeletal disorders.
• The USBJI believes in identifying, fulfilling and promoting collaborative partnership opportunities.
• The USBJI promotes funding of musculoskeletal research, recognizing that improved patient-centered outcomes are the essential measure of return on such investments.
• Racial and ethnic and other disparities are an integral consideration in all our programming activity.
• The USBJI believes that all the above should be driven by data based on the burden of disease and its impact.
Goals:
• Increase awareness of the impact of musculoskeletal disorders on Americans, regaining optimal function in their daily lives, and lowering societal and economic cost
• Increase awareness of the importance of musculoskeletal treatment and prevention strategies
• Increase funding for musculoskeletal research
• Increase musculoskeletal education for all students, trainees, and providers of healthcare
