The professional association of ophthalmologists in Germany e. V. (BVA) was founded in 1950 as one of the first democratically structured professional medical associations in Germany.
The tasks of the BVA include the perception, promotion, and representation of the professional interests of ophthalmologists. This includes, in particular, informing members about questions of professional law, relieving them of administrative tasks, and safeguarding economic interests - both in the contract and private medical sector and by combating unfair competition.
As the organizer of ophthalmological training courses and congresses and by providing comprehensive medical and professional political information for its members and for third parties (e.g. patients, medical organizations, politics), the BVA promotes the quality of ophthalmology. At the same time, it supports its members in questions of ophthalmological work in diagnostics and therapy and with comprehensive advice on matters relating to the practice of ophthalmology.
