The International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS)

Since its establishment in 1974, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine has done more to advance the study of low-back pain and disability than any other organisation.

ISSLS members, some 400 surgeons, physiotherapists, chiropractors, engineers, kinesiologists, epidemiologists and molecular and cell biologists from around the world, are at the forefront of developments and advances. Together, the contributions, activities and dedication of these individuals, have led to breakthroughs in many areas of spine research such as:
Assisting Volvo in designing the most ergonomic and comfortable seats in the global automotive industry
Developing evaluation instruments, such as the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), used to understand the effect of different spine treatments, for example spinal fusion and disc prosthesis surgery
With the help of epidemiology and genetics, Their researchers have an increased understanding of spinal disorders, allowing for the development of better treatment options
Performing large treatment studies, which address the efficacy of existing surgical and non-surgical treatment options for a range of spine problems
Investigating and developing good diagnostics, including biomechanical principles, pain mechanisms, radiological examinations and basic science findings. Such studies form the basis for the development of future successful treatment strategies.

According to the World Health Organisation’s Global Burden of Disease Study 2016, low-back pain is one of the world’s leading causes of disability. When a new discovery is made, spine researchers turn to ISSLS.
