The German Geotechnical Society (DGGT) was founded in 1950 as the German Society for Earthworks and Foundation Engineering (DGEG). It is dedicated to science and practice in all questions related to the use of soil and rock as building ground and building material.
The DGGT is divided into the specialist sections soil mechanics, earthworks and foundation engineering, rock mechanics, engineering geology, plastics in geotechnics and environmental geotechnics. These currently include thirty-nine working groups.
The DGGT includes individuals as full members, companies as extraordinary members, institutes, associations and authorities as sponsors. The DGGT currently has about 2000 members.
The DGGT maintains close contact with its geoscientific neighboring societies and maintains scientific relationships with related organizations at home and abroad. It is a member of the "International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering" (ISSMGE), the "International Society for Rock Mechanics" (ISRM), the "International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment" (IAEG) and has a "German Chapter " of the "International Geotextile Society" (IGS).
