The specialty of Hematology was differentiated from that of Pathology and the first independent Hematology clinics began to be created in Greece and Cyprus only in the 1980s.

The first doctors specializing in Hematology in our country initially worked in pathology clinics or in Hematology laboratories and Blood Donations, but without an organic position in them, and some of them practiced the profession in the private sector. The first Hematology Clinics were organized in 1995 at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia and Limassol General Hospital. The clinic of the Makarios Hospital has been operating in the New General Hospital of Nicosia since 2008. Today, clinics in the private sector and the Oncology Center of the Bank of Cyprus operate.

Purpose:
• The study of all subjects, which includes Hematology: Clinical Hematology, Laboratory Hematology, Blood Donation, Blood Therapy, Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, Gene Therapy.
• Utilizing the hematology specialty to the highest degree by any suitable means for the benefit of science, society and patients.
• The continuous training of the members of the Association in all subjects that Hematology includes: Clinical Hematology, Laboratory Hematology, Blood Donation, Blood Therapy, Transplantation of Hematopoietic Cells.
• The continuous information and training of doctors of other specialties in the subjects of Hematology so that they too can contribute more effectively to the early diagnosis of hematological diseases among the general population.
• Enlightening public opinion and every authority on the socio-economic importance of blood diseases and blood donation and, at the same time, stimulating everyone's interest in the required support for the suffering hematological patient and participation in the promotion of voluntary blood donation and hematopoietic donation web in general, with the observance of all ethical values.
• The observance by the members of the Association of the rules deriving from Medical Ethics.
• The contribution and cooperation of foreign scientists and organizations in the activities of the Association.
• The defense of the Hematologist's titles, his professional status and his contribution to society, both in Cyprus and in the European area.
• Ensuring and promoting the free movement of hematologists in the countries of the European Union.
• The representation of the specialty of Hematology in the corresponding section of the European Union of Physicians UEMS with more specific purposes:
• The equal participation of Cypriot representatives in working groups at the community level,
• The active participation in any kind of event related to the specialty of Hematology at the European level,
• The information on cooperation programs between the member states of the European Union,
• Information about European educational and research programs and exchange programs, as well as the facilitation of members' participation in these programs.
• The correct information-information of the public and patients with hematological diseases, in matters of prevention and treatment by any available means (print, electronic).
