Thai Osteoporosis Foundation (TOPF)

Bangkok, Bangkok, Thailand

The establishment of the Thai Osteoporosis Foundation resulted from the collaboration of physicians from various fields who served as the organizing committee for the 1st Asian Osteoporosis Academic Conference. This conference was organized by the Royal College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Thailand and the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). The Royal College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Thailand appointed Dr. Suthorn Bovornrattanawet as the chairman of the conference. Dr. Suthorn sent a letter inviting senior professors in related fields, such as orthopedics, internal medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology, to serve as committee members.

During its work, the committee recognized that osteoporosis would become a national public health problem in the future if medical professionals from all relevant disciplines did not cooperate in campaigning to raise public knowledge and understanding. Physicians in each relevant discipline also needed to receive accurate education about osteoporosis. Furthermore, there was no central organization in Thailand that would unite physicians from all relevant disciplines to collaborate at the national level and act as a central organization for international contacts. Consequently, the committee initiated the establishment of the Osteoporosis Foundation of Thailand with this objective in mind.
