Society for Geriatric Medicine (Singapore) (SGMS)

Singapore, Singapore, Singapore

The practice of Geriatric Medicine was formally introduced in Singapore in 1987 and had started with only a handful of Geriatric Medicine trainees who were sent to Scotland in the late 1980s to learn the intricacies of Geriatric Medicine.

The Society for Geriatric Medicine (Singapore) (SGMS) was officially registered on 24th October 1996 with the following objectives:
• To promote and maintain standards of Geriatric Medicine and care of the elderly.
• To promote the development of comprehensive geriatric services.
• To promote research in Geriatric Medicine and care of the elderly.
• To promote undergraduate and post-graduate training in Geriatric Medicine.

Till date, over 100 Geriatricians, clinicians with a special interest in caring for the elderly and trainees in Geriatric Medicine have joined the SGMS and are providing care for the burgeoning elderly cohort of the population.
