Shanghai Medical Association (SMA), founded in April 1917, once called Shanghai Branch of Chinese Medical Association, has the history of more than 90 years. From 1991, the name of “Shanghai Medical Association” has been used. However, the name of “Shanghai Branch of Chinese Medical Association” is guaranteed to the continuity of existing for international academic exchanges.

Now SMA has developed into an organization with 76 specialty societies, 7 working committees and 238 corporate members, over 13,100 individual members. Concentrating a galaxy of talents in the medical fields in Shanghai, SMA is a non-governmental academic organization with a nationwide reputation for its long history, immense creativity, active scientific activities and information exchange. So SMA has the capacity of standing first on the list of 20 best institutes of the whole country.

SMA has established itself with the functions of organizing academic exchanges, conducting continuing education, popularizing medical science and technology, providing consultation on medical technological development and undertaking parts of the transformation of government functions, as well as protecting the legitimate rights of medical professionals, with about 100 full-time staff now. The daily operation of SMA is carried out through the following sectors: the General Office, Department of Organization, Department of Scientific Program and Association Affairs, Department International Exchanges, Department of Editing and Publishing, Department of Science and Technology Evaluation, the Center of Technology Identification of Medical Malpractice and the Library.

SMA is active in conducting all kinds of programs and activities to promote medical academic exchanges, such as lectures, seminars, workshops, annual meetings, national and regional conferences, bilateral and multilateral international conferences. Moreover, several medical delegations from SMA also visited some other countries and regions on exchange programs. SMA develops a long-term friendly and collaborative relationship with overseas counterparts and many international organizations in medical field.
