Sahlgrenska University Hospital was formed on January 1, 1997, when the emergency hospitals Sahlgrenska, Ostra and Molndal were merged into one.

The purpose of the merger was to make the best use of the combined resources for healthcare in Greater Gothenburg, in order to ensure residents receive good care now and in the future.

Mission and vision:
Sahlgrenska University Hospital has three main tasks:
provide county health care to the residents of Greater Gothenburg
provide highly specialized care to the residents of Vastra Gotaland and the rest of the country
conduct research, development and teaching
Vision:
Sahlgrenska University Hospital must contribute to a good life for the residents of Vastra Gotaland - for health and safety in everyday life and for a vibrant Vastra Gotaland. It is the responsibility of all businesses and all employees - regardless of role, task, mission - to look after both the needs of the individual and the collective needs of the region's residents.
