The beginnings of organized Polish Periodontology date back to the 1930s, when in 1934 the Polish Association of Parodontal Research was established at the Lviv Medical Chamber as a full member of the international organization Association pour les Recherches sur Paradontopathies (ARPA Internationale).
After World War II, in 1947, the Organizing Committee of the Polish ARPA Group was established in Warsaw and in 1956 it became a member of this organization.
After 1970, when ARPA Internationale was dissolved, Polish periodontists created the Periodontology Sections operating at the Polish Dental Society (PTS). Educational, research and development activities in the field of periodontics were conducted all the time.
Pre- and post-graduate training courses were organized at symposia, workshops and courses, at numerous national and international conferences. One of the important achievements of these works was the creation of independent periodontal organizational units operating at all universities educating dentists in Poland, as well as obtaining a separate medical and dental specialization in the field of periodontology.
In 1993, the PTS Periodontology Section was invited to join the EFP, and in 1994 its representative participated in Europerio 1 in Paris, obtaining the status of an organization associated with EFP. Full membership in the European Federation, in accordance with the provisions of its statute, was made conditional on the gaining greater independence of the organization of Polish periodontists, and further steps were taken in this direction.
