Norwegian Society for Age Research / Norsk selskap for aldersforskning

Norwegian Society for Age Research is a union of honorable history. The association was founded in 1954. It was called "Norwegian gerontological company" and should be "a link between professionals working with the elderly."

The National Association of Gerontology (NGI) was established in 1957 and later taken over by the Ministry of Social Affairs, 1st, 1973. The name was changed to the Norwegian Gerontological Institute. The institute was formally part of the Norwegian Institute for Upbringing, Welfare and Aging (NOVA), a group of four former institutes / research institutions (NGI, INAS, BVU and UNGFORSK).

Gerontology is now being conducted at a number of institutes, universities, colleges and foundations, but often sporadically and without a firmly organized basis and solid financial support. It is a major challenge to further develop the research field and to recruit and educate professionals in the field.

The Norwegian Society for Age Research is currently the only organization whose purpose is to promote gerontology and has this in the name of the organization.
