New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (NZSOHNS)

The New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery (NZSOHNS) is the organisation which represents Otolaryngologists/Head & Neck Surgeons (Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeons) in New Zealand. The membership of the NZSOHNS is composed primarily of Otolaryngologists/Head & Neck Surgeons registered in New Zealand.

Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery is the branch of medicine that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and head & neck, including:

• Hearing loss
• Nasal and sinus disease
• Tonsillitis
• Voice and swallowing problems
• Snoring and upper airway blockage
• Salivary gland disorders
• Benign tumours of the head and neck
• Cancer of the head and neck (mouth, throat, sinuses and skin)

In conjunction with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the NZSOHNS administers the New Zealand National Training Programme to select and train New Zealand's future Otolaryngologists/Head & Neck Surgeons.

The NZSOHNS holds an Annual Scientific Meeting each year for the professional development of its members. Otolaryngologists/Head & Neck Surgeons from other countries are also welcome to attend.

Objectives:
• The cultivation and the promotion of scientific aspects of ORLHNS and related sciences by all or any of the following:
○ The collection and dissemination by, or amongst, members of scientific knowledge and the publication of articles relating to meetings.
○ The promotion of research with or without grants or sums of money out of the funds of the society, or out of funds donated for that purpose.
○ The establishment and maintenance of libraries of information relating to ORLHNS and of museums of normal and pathological anatomy.
○ The establishment of prizes for the encouragement of scientific work out of the funds of the society or out of funds donated for that purpose.
○ The periodical meeting of members.
○ The encouragement of visits by specialists from abroad for the purpose of giving lectures and demonstrations.
○ To assist the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Surgical board of Otolaryngology in New Zealand in organising, funding and the post-graduate teaching of registered trainees for the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Otolaryngology.
• To confer, cooperate and affiliate with other bodies having similar objectives.
• To provide an authoritative body of opinion on the medical and surgical management of diseases of the ears, nose, throat, hearing, speech, head and neck, and to promote them in relation to the health of the community.
• To advise professional colleagues and disseminate information to members of the public on the scope of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and advances in the speciality.
