New England Ophthalmological Society (NEOS)

Waltham, Massachusetts, United States of America

The New England Ophthalmological Society (NEOS) is the second oldest American medical specialty society in continuous existence. Founded in 1884, the society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and advancement of ophthalmology. Now well into its second century of existence, NEOS has had the good fortune to count among its members some of the brightest and most influential leaders in ophthalmology.

The creation of the New England Ophthalmological Society was first proposed on May 1, 1884 by Hasket Derby, Benjamin Joy Jeffries, and Oliver Fairfield Wadsworth, all ophthalmologists of Boston. They proposed to organize an ophthalmological society similar to one that had been successful in New York City for 20 years.
