The University of Cracow is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in this region of Europe. It was founded on May 12, 1364 by the Polish King Casimir the Great. The General Study - that's when the University was called - consisted of three departments: liberal arts, medicine and law. During the life of the founder, only the first two functioned. After the death of the king, the university ceased to exist.
