Description:
XII century Development of the first instrumentation for measuring bladder pressure and urinary flow.1953 David Melvin Davis coined the term urodynamics in his book Mechanisms of Urologic Diseases.
History:
1876 Dubois is probably the first European to measure bladder pressure.
1882 The Italians A. Mosso and P. Pellacani demonstrate that the bladder pressure increases following the contraction of the detrusor muscle, that the bladder can contain different quantities of fluid at a constant pressure and that the onset of urination is not related to the increase of abdominal pressure.
1897 Eugen Rehfisch describes an apparatus capable of simultaneously measuring bladder pressure and urine volume.
1927 DK Rose, of Washington University in St. Louis, coins the term cystometer and describes its development and clinical utility. Rose recognizes the enormous importance of diagnosing a neurological disorder in planning a prostatectomy. Using cystometry, Rose was able to determine the strength and irritability of the bladder as well as the condition of its sensory and motor innervation. He was one of the first physicians to recognize, using cystometry, the need for intermittent catheterization in certain patients.
