The Academy for the Study of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders (LIMPE-DISMOV Academy) was born from the merger of the two major Scientific Associations that bring together healthcare professionals interested in Parkinson's disease and movement disorders in Italy. In recent years, a series of elements such as the commonality of cultural interests, the decision to jointly organize the national congress for the three-year period 2012-2014, the fact that many operators were members of both Associations and, finally, the need to more rational economic management meant that the activities of the two Associations increasingly overlapped. This sparked in many members a set of reflections on the possibility that a single Scientific Society could better promote the cultural and scientific interests and activities to be carried out in the field of Movement Disorders and Parkinson's disease.
The objectives of the Academy are:
• Constitute a national scientific point of reference to promote and disseminate knowledge in the field of Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, in the interest of healthcare professionals and patients;
• Promote and support research, both clinical and experimental and stimulate the development of clinical protocols, encouraging the conduct of multicentre and multidisciplinary studies;
• Contribute to the continuous updating of healthcare professionals in the field of Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, also with the organization of national and international conferences;
• Carry out professional updating and continuous training activities in healthcare, with annual training programs according to the national ECM programme;
• Establish relationships of cultural, scientific and practical exchange with foundations and/or scientific associations, both national and international, and with associations of healthcare workers and patients (or their families) who pursue similar objectives to those of the Academy;
• Constitute a point of reference with any public and private health bodies.
