College of Surgeons of Puerto Rico / Colegio de Medicos Cirujanos de Puerto Rico

It was on August 13, 1994, that Law 77 was passed, giving legal force to the creation of the College of Physicians-Surgeons of Puerto Rico. The College became a reality after constant and strong medical struggles. Their institution emanated from the need to create an organization that brings together all the doctors of Puerto Rico. That same year, 80% of the doctors who participated in a general referendum endorsed their membership. The College was born from the Medical Association of Puerto Rico, a centennial and respected organization, which over the years understood and accepted the reality that a voluntary organization without legal force could not fully fulfill the task of self-regulation, pattern, control and properly defend medical management and the doctor-patient relationship.
