The history of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (FZU) is rather complicated because the Institute was gradually formed by reorganization, merging and renaming of various physical workplaces. The present form was eventually only in 1979, by the merger of the Physical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences with the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and with the separation of low temperatures, detached from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the CSAV in Rez.
