In the late 1940s and early 1950s the seeds of neurosurgery were firmly planted in a formal way in India. It has now germinated into a full specialty with several distinct superspecialties within it such as Pediatric Neurosurgery, Cranial Base Surgery et al . In the late 1980s a need was felt to develop the super specialty of Paediatric Neurosurgery within the sphere of neurosurgery in India. To fulfill this objective The Indian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (IndSPN) was founded in 1990 immediately after the 17th Annual Conference of International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN) held in Bombay.

The Indian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery was founded to promote the art and science of pediatric neurosurgery in India and to improve the welfare of children in India. Another important facet of the society’s goal was the advancement of pediatric neurosurgical knowledge.
