Indian Academy of Cytologists (IAC)

Today Indian Academy of Cytologists has completed 37 years of its existence. It was founded in the summer of 1970 by a dedicated group of pathologists, gynaecologists and clinicians interested in cytology under the dynamic leadership of Dr. P.N. Wahi, the then Director – General of Indian Council of Medical Research. The 42 founder members elected Prof. P.N. Wahi as the first President of the Academy with Dr. S. Tejuja as Treasurer, and Drs. Kamala Chandra, P.K. Gupta, M. Aikat and B Lahiri as executive council members. This multi-disciplinary approach was unique, for it allowed medical and paramedical personnel to share their views on a common platform. It found its place on the international map ever since it chose to affiliate with the International Academy of Cytology and its Journal. With this, we hope, that interest personnel all over the world can acquire information of the Academy, in addition to the Journal contents.

Over the past 34 years, due to the untiring efforts of its executive committee members, the Academy has grown in strength and stature. A time has come to take stock of what have been our achievements and thank those members who have actively participated in the various programmes of the Academy. Currently the IAC has over 1100 members comprising of cytopathologists, gynaecologists, cytotechnologists and cytotechnicians drawn from all over India.
