The service currently has over 70 members, is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and responds to over 350 emergency calls per year. Each EMT on the service is trained to the highest standard and uses the best equipment available. HAS provides care ranging from patient assessment, to administering medications, to treating traumatic injuries, to CPR and defibrillation. In addition to responding to emergencies, HAS also provides standby medical coverage at community events including road races, fall festival, and town meeting.

The Town of Harvard Ambulance Service (The Service) was founded in 1972 to provide emergency medical care and hospital transport to the Town’s residents and visitors. The ambulance is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is staffed by volunteer, paid per-call, Emergency Medical Technicians. The Service maintains a Special Project Waiver from the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services, which allows Bromfield School students to complete an EMT-Basic training program, and then to respond to medical emergencies with adult Service personnel.

The Harvard Ambulance Service plays a critical role in the Town’s emergency services, and works in cooperation with the Harvard Police and Fire Departments as well as the Nashoba Valley Dispatch District. Although Service members are unpaid, they are official employees of the Town of Harvard. Patients who are residents of the Town of Harvard are never billed directly. The Service operates one ambulance, designated Harvard 13A, which is licensed at the Basic Life Support level by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS). Advanced Life Support services, when required, are provided by private and municipal Paramedics under service agreements with the Town of Harvard, who work in close conjunction with the Harvard EMTs. The Service is headquartered at 40 Ayer Road, in the Town of Harvard Public Safety Building.
