German-speaking Working Group for Hand Surgery / Deutschsprachige Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Handchirurgie (DAH)

Vienna, Wien, Austria

Towards the end of the 19th century, the possibility of operating with a much reduced risk of infection and, as a result of the introduction of blood evacuation, led to a rapid development of surgical interventions on the hand and especially on the tendons. The void of blood introduced by Esmarch (1823-1908) was an essential prerequisite for the fine operations on the hand. In France, Marc Islin founded his own hand surgery school in Enterre in 1930. In 1946, the United States established the first hand surgery society, of which Sterling Bunnell was president. As the first European hand surgery association, the Scandinavian hand club was founded in 1951 under Erik Momberg. In England it was Stack and Powder Taft in 1952 that founded the first and later the second hand club. They were often visited by German-speaking people and thus had a significant impact on German-speaking hand surgery.

Mission:
The DAH has set itself the goal of scientifically researching and further developing this branch of surgery. It strives for close contact with hand surgery societies in other countries and wants to promote young doctors in the field of hand surgery.
