With around 4,000 members , the German Society for Pain Medicine eV is the largest society of practically active pain therapists in Europe. Since it was founded in 1984, the medical society has been committed to better care for patients with chronic pain. She wants to achieve this primarily in two ways: On the one hand, through a better understanding of the (emergency) situation of pain patients in the professional world, as well as with payers, political decision-makers and the population. On the other hand, about better diagnosis of chronic pain and better treatment for those affected.

Goals:
• Support of research relevant to pain medicine (basic, therapy and health care research)
• Exchange of knowledge and ideas between doctors, scientists, psychologists and members of other professions involved in pain medicine (pain research, diagnosis and therapy)
• Development of a uniform definition of terms, nomenclature and classification for pain medicine-relevant phenomena and symptoms as well as a pain-relevant database in the German-speaking area
• Development and updating of teaching objectives, learning catalogs and guidelines for pain diagnosis, treatment and therapy control (quality assurance)
• Development and provision of teaching materials
• Basic, advanced and advanced training for doctors, psychologists and members of other professions involved in pain medicine
• Organization of scientific conferences, in particular an annual scientific conference as well as further and advanced training events
• Communication of the latest scientific findings and information to the public
• Advice to other scientific societies, health authorities, professional representations and other institutions on pain-related topics
• Implementation of any other measures that are conducive to teaching, research and treatment relevant to pain
• Representation of pain medicine and scientific interests
• Endeavor to implement knowledge of pain medicine in care
• Comprehensive pain medicine care through the establishment of a specialist in pain medicine
