The DGE-BV was founded in 1967 by Professor Dr. L. Demling in Erlangen as the "German Society for Endoscopy." Reflecting its interdisciplinary nature and interests, the society was renamed the "German Society for Endoscopy and Imaging" in 1985 under the presidency of Professor Dr. P. Hermanek, Erlangen.

The DGE-BV has the following goals:
• To represent endoscopic techniques and imaging procedures in cooperation with the associated clinical disciplines and to support interdisciplinary continuing education and training.
• To promote technological progress in medicine.
• To give young scientists the opportunity to have a practically oriented forum and to position themselves with their own projects.
• As a central and connecting interdisciplinary society, the DGE-BV enables unique standardization and certification as well as communication with the responsible authorities and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.
