German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) / Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie (GMDS) e.V.

Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

The "German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) eV" - until September 1991 it was called the "German Society for Medical Documentation, Informatics and Statistics eV (GMDS)" - is an independent scientific-medical specialist society. It is registered as a non-profit association based in Cologne in the register of associations. It is one of the large number of scientific and medical organizations, which amounts to around 180 organizations in the Federal Republic of Germany, and has its primary field of activity in theory and application, in research and teaching. Its task is to promote medical informatics including medical documentation, medical biometry and epidemiology.

Since the mid-1950s, the activities of the new discipline "Medical Documentation and Statistics" have been incorporated into the efforts of the "Medical Working Committee" founded in 1955 in the German Society for Documentation, the forerunner of today's GMDS. While the origins of GMDS can be traced back to 1951, it was finally constituted as a society in 1955. This makes it the oldest specialist society in Europe in the field of medical documentation, IT and statistics.

Goals & Tasks:
The "German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) eV" is an independent scientific and medical specialist society whose primary field of activity is in medical informatics, medical biometry, epidemiology, medical bioinformatics and systems biology, including medical documentation in theory and application, in research and teaching.

The GMDS offers its medical-informatics, biometric and epidemiological methods as a "cross-sectional subject" of all medical sub-areas in cooperation and further develops these methods together with computer science, mathematics, statistics, clinical research, bioinformatics and health services research.

With around 2,000 members, the GMDS is currently the only scientific society for these five disciplines in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It cooperates with a number of neighboring specialist societies to exchange experiences, to pursue common goals or, for example, to organize joint workshops or conference sections.

In addition, the representation of the subject continues to develop through expert representation, for example in the planning of public funding measures, in questions of standardization and standardization, in the establishment of teaching institutions, in training, further and advanced training issues and in legislative measures.
