Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) offers a community-based model of undergraduate medical education with campuses in Scranton, Danville, Sayre and Wilkes-Barre. The school’s innovative Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree curriculum, focused on caring for people in the context of their lives and their community, attracts the next generation of physicians and scientists from within its region, as well as from across Pennsylvania and the nation. In addition to the MD program, Geisinger Commonwealth offers a master’s degree in biomedical sciences in both Scranton and Doylestown. The school also has more than 440 trainees in 24 graduate medical education programs and offers 19 accredited fellowships from addiction medicine to vascular surgery. History:
Geisinger Commonwealth was established through the grassroots efforts of visionary individuals who foresaw what a community-based medical school would bring to the region and worked to make it a reality. Their goal was to provide more physicians and improved healthcare resources for the people of northeast and central Pennsylvania. The vision was to create a unique medical education experience that focused on caring for people in the context of their lives and in their community.
