The history of the Society for the Study of Spinal Diseases begins when in 1983 a small group of orthopedic and rehabilitative surgeons with a preference for spinal deviations decided to found the Iberian Group for the Study of Spinal Deformities (GIEDER). The society grew rapidly and in 1992 it decided to expand the scope of study to the entirety of spinal column pathology, becoming the current GEER.
