Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences (DBSV) - University of Insubria

Varese, Lombardia, Italy

The Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences (DBSV) was established in 2011 with the idea of uniting the biological sciences, biotechnology and medicine in a single research environment . In this perspective, the common goal of all the areas that make up the Department is to create synergies between basic and applied research, between research in the laboratory and the clinic , promoting an interdisciplinary approachable to train students and researchers with a complete and innovative scientific and technological vision in life sciences and biotechnologies. This choice has allowed the achievement of significant results both in terms of research and teaching, normally only possible in large universities, without losing the agility of a structure of limited dimensions.

The Department is organized in two Sections , Section of Biological Sciences and Technologies and Section of Medical and Surgical Sciences. This organization allows an agile and flexible management and adapted to the needs of the two disciplinary areas, which, despite having many inter-area collaborations, are characterized by specificities related to research, teaching and third mission activities.

The focus of DBSV research is on the well-being of humans, animals and the environment. The Department expresses a good level of research, conducted in highly qualified laboratories, in the field of Biotechnology and Medical Sciences, with peaks of excellence both for scientific production and for national and international collaborations.

In the biological / biotechnological area the training offer includes two three-year degree courses (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences) and two master's degrees (Biomedical Sciences and Molecular and Industrial Biotechnologies) and a PhD in Biotechnology and Life Sciences. In the medical area, the Department is the contact point for 7 Specialization Schools and delivers two second-level Masters for Medicine and Surgery graduates.

As part of the third mission activities , DBSV is committed to the dissemination, communication and dissemination of scientific knowledge in order to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of society, with particular attention to the territory in which the University of Insubria Opera. The Department also focuses on the economic enhancement of knowledge: the intense interactions with companies make it possible to develop technological and scientific transfer activities and to orient the research planning towards the application.
