British Trauma Society (BTS)

Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom

The British Trauma Society is going from strength to strength and is a now a thriving and lively society formed to promote research and education in the care of the injured.

This was held in central Manchester in November 2018 and was well received with very good feedback. It was particularly special as it was the 30th anniversary of its foundation and it fulfilled the aims of the founding members for it to be a multidisciplinary meeting about the care of the injured. The planned celebration was, however, interrupted by a fire alarm at the venue!

There were themed sections to the meeting and included hot topics such as the current emergency preparedness strategies particularly related to terrorist activity. Dr Martin Smith who was involved in the care of the Manchester arena bombing victims gave an outline of the event and provided an update on what had changed in management and preparedness strategies in case of future incidents. Lt Cdr Penn-Barwell explored relevance of application of military experience to civilian terrorist injuries around the theme of ‘how to make good better’.
