The Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM) recently launched identification cards aimed at patients living with some rare diseases that are little known to many health professionals: AVP deficiency (diabetes insipidus), acute adrenal insufficiency and hypoparathyroidism (which causes hypocalcemic crisis).
The initiative aims to offer greater safety in medical emergency situations, facilitating rapid recognition of health conditions and providing guidance on necessary care.
The three cards contain essential information about each disease, such as associated risks and actions to take in cases of crisis. They also serve as a warning to healthcare professionals unfamiliar with these clinical conditions, allowing for faster and more appropriate care.
According to the SBEM, the project meets a long-standing demand from the medical community and patients themselves, who often face difficulties in emergency care due to a lack of knowledge about these rare diseases. "It's a simple and practical way to save lives," emphasized Dr. Marise Lazaretti Castro, scientific director of the SBEM.
