The American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) was established in 1972 as the American Osteopathic Board of General Practitioners. The Board of Trustees of the American Osteopathic Association approved the name change of the Board in July 1993. All physicians awarded certification in general practice are currently listed as the board certified in family practice if all AOA membership requirements have been satisfied.

Voluntary recertification in family medicine began in Fall 1994 with mandatory Recertification every eight years required for certification awarded in March 1997 and thereafter. CAQ certificates in addiction medicine and sports medicine are time-dated for ten years. The CAQ certificate in Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine and the CAQ certificate in Geriatric Medicine are time-dated for ten years if issued after December 31, 1995.
