Cardiovascular disease is now a women’s as well as a men’s disease. Healthy lifestyle choices are vital to the prevention of heart disease; therefore, this course emphasizes issues related to diet, exercise, weight control, and smoking cessation. The course covers the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Content specifically addresses how modifiable risk factors, including lipids, obesity, inactivity, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, stress, and alcohol consumption can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease in women. Armed with this knowledge, nurses can help prevent and treat heart disease in women. The module also discusses future research and ways nurses can influence patients to take steps to better care for themselves.
