1. What is the Microbiome and Why You Should Care

The microbiome is a rich collection of microbes, such as bacteria and fungi and their surrounding environment. These microbes naturally live on and with us and have an important impact on our health and wellness. This activity will review what constitutes the microbiome and describe the gut and the skin microbiome. This activity will also discuss the concept and biochemical basis for the gut-skin axis and briefly discuss the role of fermented foods on both the gut and skin microbiome.

After completing this activity, participants will able to:
• Define the microbiome
• Describe the gut and the skin microbiome
• Discuss the biochemical basis for the gut-skin axis
