Description:
von Willebrand disease is the most common inherited genetic bleeding disorder, yet it is virtually unknown to the public, and it is not well known or understood among healthcare providers. Twenty percent of women with menorrhagia have vWD, and an average of 16 years elapses from the onset of a woman’s symptoms and the diagnosis of vWD. This delay is in part due to knowledge deficits among women with heavy menstrual bleeding and the lack of aggressiveness in working up complaints of excessive bleeding. One survey funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the gynecologists who were questioned were unlikely to refer a woman with unexplained menorrhagia to other specialists, and less than 40% would even consider bleeding disorders in women of reproductive age. This continuing education program will update healthcare professionals’ knowledge of the diagnosis and care of patients with vWD.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this von Willebrand disease continuing education program is to update healthcare providers on the care of patients with vWD. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Identify clinical manifestations and information from patients’ health histories that suggest vWD
• Describe the diagnostic process for vWD
• Identify treatments and the educational needs of patients with vWD
