Course Description:
This course helps nurses respond more confidently to dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, motion sensitivity, visual disturbance, falls risk, and vestibular-related functional concerns. Learners explore the balance system, symptom language, common vestibular patterns, urgent red flags, BPPV literacy, vestibular rehabilitation exercise principles, mobility confidence, cervical contribution, and coordinated referral pathways.

The course does not aim to turn every nurse into a vestibular rehabilitation provider or authorise positional testing, canalith repositioning, exercise prescription, cervical assessment, or manual therapy outside scope. Instead, it gives nurses a practical framework for clarifying what a patient means by "dizzy," recognising when symptoms require urgent review, documenting useful clinical detail, supporting safety, and connecting patients with appropriate medical, vestibular rehabilitation, ENT, audiology, neurology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or falls services.

What You Will Learn:

• Vestibular Clinical Literacy:
  Understand the roles of the inner ear, vision, proprioception, cervical input, postural muscles, and central processing in balance and gaze stability.
• Symptom Clarification:
  Differentiate spinning vertigo, faintness, rocking, tilting, imbalance, visual motion sensitivity, nausea, disorientation, and fear of falling.
• Safety and Red Flags:
  Recognise urgent features such as sudden neurological symptoms, severe new headache, head injury, acute inability to walk, sudden hearing change, or concerning systemic causes.
• Rehabilitation and Referral:
  Understand the nursing relevance of BPPV pathways, gaze stabilisation, habituation, balance training, falls prevention, patient education, adherence, and referral.

Course Pathway:
The learning pathway moves from vestibular anatomy and symptom language into safety screening, common patterns, rehabilitation principles, referral, documentation, and case-based integration.

• Clarify: Ask what dizzy means: spinning, faintness, rocking, visual disturbance, imbalance, nausea, or disorientation.
• Screen:Check red flags, falls risk, head injury, hearing change, neurological signs, medication, and systemic concerns.
• Confirm Scope: Clarify what is permitted by role, region, policy, training, and competence.
• Support or Refer:Use safety education, mobility support, referral, vestibular services, ENT, neurology, or falls pathways.
• Document: Record triggers, duration, symptom quality, safety concerns, observations, referrals, and follow-up needs.

Important Scope Note: Nursing scope varies by country, region, register, employer policy, job role, training, competence, consent requirements, supervision arrangements, and indemnity or insurance. Some nurses may be authorised to support selected vestibular exercises, balance activities, patient education, or elements of vestibular care in specific settings. Others may not.
