Course Description:
Dizziness and vertigo account for about 5% to 6% of all visits to healthcare providers. Sometimes, patients cannot differentiate between the two and use the words interchangeably. Dizziness is an imprecise term that includes feelings of faintness, unsteadiness, or light-headedness. Vertigo is an illusion of movement of self or the environment. The perceived movement is usually a spinning or wheeling sensation; patients report feeling as if the room were circling around them or that they are moving around the room. Symptoms are usually related to changes in head position. This module discusses vertigo, a disorder of the peripheral or central nervous system. Healthcare professionals, such as nurses and physical therapists, should collaborate on treatment and management of patients with vertigo to help promote improved outcomes.

Conference Objectives:
The goal of this continuing education program is to inform clinical nurses, advance practice nurses, and physical therapists about vertigo, its causes, and its treatment with medications and therapeutic exercises. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:

• Name the most common medications to treat vertigo
• Describe three maneuvers to diagnose and treat vertigo
