OVERVIEW

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a rapidly progressive form of respiratory failure characterized by severe hypoxemia, non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema, and decreased lung compliance. ARDS often arises in the context of critical illnesses such as sepsis, pneumonia, trauma, or pancreatitis, and requires immediate and highly specialized ventilatory management to prevent irreversible lung injury and multi-organ failure.

This CME/CE course provides an in-depth exploration of ventilation strategies tailored to the clinical management of ARDS. Beginning with a framework for early recognition, learners will review the diagnostic criteria established by the Berlin Definition, which stratifies ARDS severity based on the PaO2/FiO2 ratio. The course covers critical insights into the underlying pathophysiology, including diffuse alveolar damage, impaired gas exchange, and the inflammatory response contributing to ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI).

Participants will learn the principles of lung-protective ventilation, focusing on low tidal volume strategies (4–6 mL/kg of predicted body weight), maintaining plateau pressures below 30 cm H2O, and using appropriate levels of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). The course also covers the role of adjunctive therapies such as prone positioning, recruitment maneuvers, neuromuscular blockade, and the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in cases of refractory hypoxemia.

Real-world case scenarios are incorporated to guide clinical decision-making in ICU and emergency settings. Participants will be empowered to individualize ventilatory care, balancing the need for oxygenation against the risk of overdistention and shear stress. The curriculum addresses key controversies and evolving practices in mechanical ventilation, including driving pressure minimization, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), and sedation protocols.

This program is essential for healthcare professionals who manage critically ill patients and seek to improve outcomes through precision-guided ventilation strategies.
