Overview :
With the aging US population, calcific aortic stenosis has eclipsed rheumatic heart disease as a major cause of valvular heart disease. In this talk, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, the Edgar Leifer Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University, uses case studies to review the latest advances in the evaluation and management of aortic stenosis and mitral insufficiency, including the latest guidelines from the AHA/ACC.
Learning Objectives :
• Identify clinical and laboratory markers of severe aortic stenosis.
• Apply treatment strategies for patients with non-critical aortic stenosis.
• Identify the pathophysiology of the effect of mitral insufficiency on the cardiovascular system.
• Distinguish between clinical criteria for medical versus surgical management of mitral insufficiency.
• Define the concerns for an internist caring for a patient with a prosthetic heart valve.
