Globally, Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia, sepsis, otitis media, and meningitis. Influenzavirus infection is one of the most common infectious disease in North America. Varicella (chickenpox) is caused by the varicella zoster virus, and following the initial infection during childhood, VZV becomes dormant in the spinal dorsal root ganglia. Reactivation of this virus results in herpes zoster (shingles). Prevention is the most effective strategy for these three global infectious disorders. Vaccines for all three organisms have proven effective and cost-efficient. Healthcare providers must understand the appropriate use, storage, and indications for these vaccines to ensure positive health outcomes for patients.
